Summer's end
Cue the crickets
Every summer of my life I have visited the same lake, and the past few years at least once per stay, I hear a wayward cricket in the house. A lone singer. Sometimes it is hard to locate the poor little one but we always do, and usher it back out to the choir. This year, it was easy. There he was in the corner of the basement, lungs pumping, alone and dejected in the corner. I have such a soft spot for crickets.
Crickets also signal the end of summer, it’s such a bittersweet sound, and one I’ve come to love more and more over the years. It is my favorite time of year, in spite of, or maybe because of the sense of change in the air…so many beginnings and endings, speeding back up after slowing way down.
But you don’t need me to tell you about this when there is Once More to the Lake by E. B. White, which perfectly paints the timeless picture of summers and summers past. It was written in 1941, but is still extremely relevant and beautiful. Read it here, if you like.
Before I talk more about crickets (I know, I know, hold your horses!) I have a couple events coming up I want to let you know about:
I’m featured in this very cool exhibit through September! It’s on the Endicott College campus and is open to the public in the Manninen Center for the Arts building.
September 4, 4-7pm - Panel discussion with the artists followed by a meet and greet. Carol Grillo Art Gallery, 406 Hale St, Beverly, MA
I would love to see you there!
Gallows Hill Artists studios will be open to the public on September 13th from 12-6pm. Come see where I create, buy signed books and stationery, and visit with the 27 other artists too!
And now I will leave you with the crickets. Happy summers end, everyone.
